They say one thing for certain is that things change. Change for me is important, and I realised that couple of years ago when I was at the CliftonStrengths training having a conversation with a fellow coach. I realised that having too much structure in my day or week was literally doing my head in. When some people thrive in the structured world, I was feeling like I am suffocating. And here is why.
Out of my top 5 strengths, Adaptability is one of my top 5 talents. What it means is that I have this ease to adapt to new situations, live more in the present time (in the now) and generally go with the flow. According to CliftonStrengths “people with Adaptability believe that life is unexpected and change is the only constant. Things will always change according to the actions and decisions you make now. You anticipate and embrace uncertainties. Rather than planning every step, you prefer to leave space for exploration and moments to go with the flow and see how things turn out.” So if my week is too structured, it doesn’t leave too much space for the uncertainty it frustrates me.
Realising that was a huge eye-opener for me. Because I can also be more purposeful in my changes. One of them is being able to change my hair colour (and as you can see, currently it is purple). I take different routes on my way home, I do unexpected things. All of that helps me keep my Adaptability ‘happy’ that things are different.
