Why is it so hard to change? How often did you decide to implement change in your life, to drop it a couple of weeks later? How many resolutions have you kept, and how many have you dropped? For myself, I have tried to change things numerous times, and then I failed.
So what happened? I have lost motivation. Things got too busy. Too hard. It was too scary to think about what my life would look like after the change happened. I found it difficult to imagine what things I would need to give up in order for the new to come in. I had many excuses.
Change might feel scary. Change might feel overwhelming. It might feel sad. After all, we will need to grieve what was lost. Let go of old for the new to come in. To reinvent ourselves in the new reality.
But would we instigate change if the old was still serving us? If we wouldn't want something different? If we weren't ready for the new to come in? But what can we do?
One thing is to find and stick to our core motivation for change, to figure out our WHY. That core motivation is the driver, and it will help us when things go hard, and they will.
So, for example, if you want to lose weight, what is your the driver behind that? Start by asking yourself, why? The scenario might go like this:
I want to loose weight.
Why?
To be more healthy and look better.
Why is it important?
When I look better, I will stop being judged for what I look like. Why is it important?
...
This can repeat several times. Ask yourself why until you cannot find the answer anymore. The last statement will become your core motivation.
And that motivation will help you stay on track when things get tough. So write it down, put in where you can see it, so you can remember it. And when things get tough, go back to it to keep going.
I leave you with those words by Erin Hanson. "What if I fail. Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?"
